the governor. >> they have their own tax policies energy costs, property taxes which is a local issue as opposed to the state issue that they have to account for. if we can stop competition, we should do it. but, we don't have those things. it is not an even playing field. let me give you another example. my republican governor colleagues want to see medicaid blocked. almost all of my democratic colleagues don't want to see it done. most of the democrats represent state that is will not enter into a race to the bottom when it comes to medical benefits. connecticut is never going to act as one legislature did in a state to deny a kidney transplant to somebody whose life will be saved by it. if you block grant it, you have a bunch of states that are not going to do this or this. there are states that are trapped. they wouldn't tolerate putting someone to death over a bad kidney. this is a serious argument. we can all talk about how we compare ourselves. understand, underlying all of that is we are not comparable. >> i actually think you are making a really, you are giving me a great ope

it has happened since october 4th. retailers drove the consumer discretionary sector energy industrials lead in the wake, and the rally started just minutes before house speaker made it clear that republicans are willing to deal on revenue and ready to find a resolution now. >> we all know that we have had this spending crisis coming at us like a freight train. it must be dealt with. and in order to try to come to an agreement, republicans are willing to put revenue on the table, but it is time for the president and democrats to get serious about the spending problem that our country has. i am optimistic that we can continue to work together to avert this crisis sooner rather than later. lou: meanwhile, the president to a short time later claimed he is doing his part to make certain the middle class is not hit with tax increases. >> i want to reassure the american people and doing our part, sitting down with ceos, sitting down with labour leaders, talking to leaders in congress. i am ready and able and willing and excited to go ahead and did this issue resolved in a bipartisan fashion.

here. what is interesting when you have mergers and acquisition particularly in energy this is something that brings positive sentiment to wall street. let's look at freeport-mcmoran. also taking a look at other names that are involved, right? you're looking at, see how they are faring. plains exploration is up 25%. mcmoran exploration up 82%. freeport-mcmoran is buying both of those together. this is $9 billion. this is about oil and gas producers and it will create a natural resources conglomerate. this is a huge, huge move. freeport-mcmoran is a name we always took to when we talk about commodities and things on the move and on a day where oil and gold are to the downside, gold in particular talking about freeport-mcmoran, copper and gold. you can see it is down 14%. that is not unusual to see an acquirer selling off as the two that are being acquired are gaining big-time. this is the action we're seeing in this mining and oil and exploration type deal and this is a big one. certainly scooped up wall street this morning. back to you. melissa: nicole, thanks so much.

hit the highest level since 1998, another step towards energy independence in the country, and another reason why oil prices are under pressure. the spread between the u.s. and europe, we're making a lot of progress on the oil production front, but across theeboard, we are seeing products really getting hit. oil, a feature today, down over five cents a gallon, and a lot has to do with the warm temperatures and slowing demand. other big news on europe, production coming back and crude pressing it down. the standard here, how the medal -- throwing it to sandra here, how the metals looking? >> gold and silver down, commodities in the red. gold, certainly, no two ways about it, a rough time of it lately. not just down $23 today, but dropping below the $1700 level, but despite that drop today, gold still up about 9%. so far this year, it's had a lot of volatility, but the same thing can't be said, guys, looking at gds, a come -- compilation of the mining stocks which we have in the portfolios. miners down 11% so far this year. not tracking the price of the yellow metal. barrens saying they
